Once you spawn find the nearest tree.

Then you walk up to it and hold the the left button on you mouse until the log disappears and then do that to the rest of the logs on the tree. You should get a log like this in your inventory.

then left click  on the log and drag it over your crafting  and place your logs in one of the grates  and it should make wooden planks  then place those like so.

If you have a iPhone or any sort of device that can download apps than I would recommend

Now you may realize that you have a limited time before it terns night. Monsters will come out after that if you don’t have it on peaceful. Kill a mob is like punching a peace of wood but now you click in tell it dies.
